Focus On Spontaneous Reactions

Futuready Skill #3: INCLUSIVE

Move hearts and minds

Death by PowerPoint. It’s frequently said. All too often misquoted. Because the phrase is missing a critical word.

Death by bad PowerPoints.

Think about it for a moment. Presentation apps like PowerPoint enable you to accompany your speech with type and images.

So is it a truism that powerful presentations never use images? Or that visually emphasising words won’t increase your clarity and impact?

A knife is a vital tool of the trade for a skilled chef – yet can inflict damage when used without care. The same goes for presentation visuals in the hands of a leader.

So how can you safely sharpen up your presentation?

Just as great cooking depends on tasting along the way, test your presentation on others as it takes shape. Ignore your own biases and observe their reactions far closer than usual.

That pivotal slide that you think is brilliant but fails to gain a visible or audible response? Reword, simplify or just delete it.

While that seemingly incidental phrase or image part-way through, that sparks an important realisation or conversation? Try moving it right to the front to create immediate engagement.

Transforming Death by PowerPoint into Life by Presentation.
