Aspire to be more than #1
Have you noticed how organisations’ visions are often a variation on the formula:
“We will be #1 in our industry through happy customers, staff and shareholders.”
The problem with visions like this is… they’re not visionary. They simply describe a generic human aspiration while failing to vision what’s needed to get there.
This doesn’t mean the leaders involved aren’t visionary. I know from mentoring visionaries across society – from startup founders to government CEOs – sometimes all it takes is the right questions and space to think. To imagine. To vision.
Vision means to see. So becoming “#1” requires seeing beyond the narrow confines of a metric goal. Visioning what your team will do differently to reach the goal. Clarifying together what you will have created as a result.
Facilitate the process by asking three focusing questions – what are we visioning, when in time, physically looking from where?
Then describe, write or even more powerfully sketch what you can see. For example instead of the generic “happy staff” you might now vision “a purposeful team guided by predictive priorities.”
The future is yours to vision.
