Refocus when goals shift

The dynamics and patterns of times past might repeat – or they might not.

Have you ever been in a meeting that drifted off topic or seemed to go on forever – yet still failed to result in clear actions?

Then you know all too well the challenges of effective facilitation – whether you’re prioritising the week’s activities or strategically planning for the year ahead. In an ever-changing environment.

Strategy is a plan of action to achieve major aims, so clearly defined and tracked goals are critical to strategic progress. Building momentum and aligning effort by cascading from your shared vision to agreed goals.

Vision defines direction in a way that is compelling and clarifying without being overly specific or constraining.

Goals define direction in a way that is specific and constraining.

On the sports field the goals are clear.

What is not clear is how to successfully achieve them in the face of an unknown opposition. Even when the opposition is a known quantity – it is still always an unknown quantity. The dynamics and patterns of times past might repeat – or they might not.

In business as in life, the goals are even more complex.

Imagine if the goalposts on the playing field suddenly moved. Or changed in size.

While this would elevate the game to a whole new level of difficulty, you would still adapt. Recognising that the previous strategy might no longer be fit for purpose. Requiring adaptation.

While also recognising that if the previous goals had changed, that could also mean that other even more valuable goals may have appeared.

Not only changing how you reach the goal but where best to aim.
