Question Misleading Exponential Curves
I’m not disputing whether change is needed. But I do always question how far into the future the rate will continue.
If the volume of digital data doubles every year, how can you possibly keep up?!
Relax. You don’t need to.
It’s yet another misleading exponential curve. We’ve all seen them. Exponential curves based on past growth rates continuing indefinitely. Emphasising why change is needed.
I’m not disputing whether change is needed. But I do always question how far into the future the rate will continue before it peaks. Or the context shifts.
As a result flattening never-ending exponential growth into an S curve transition. In search of the next misleading exponential curve. As society evolves forward…
The weight of stone tablets delivered every year will shift the earth out of orbit
The number of carrier pigeon messages sent each week will consume all the grain in the world
The amount of data couriered each day will stack on CDs to the moon and back
The volume of video messages streamed every hour will take a billion years to watch…
Exponential curves are a vital communication tool. They dramatically emphasise that change is needed.
Questions to ask are what will that change be… and will we be resisting or leading the shift?
